Wig Review: SHEVY Wig (semi-custom) in Dirty Blond

Posted by Unknown at 10:42 AM
I conducted an interview with a fellow dark blonde in Los Angeles on her stunning out-of-box (semi-custom) Shevy wig.  Shevys are best known for their customs that have been popular among kallahs (Jewish brides) for at least the last 5 years.  Please note that by semi-custom I refer to "high-end custom quality" but that Shevy Wigs manufactures for retail sale without a custom order.  The term semi-custom became most prevalent when wig companies decided to manufacture high quality wigs resembling their customs but to be available for immediate purchase. This is an 18 inch style number Shevy MB 17951. Enjoy the review!

Chavi: How did you go about purchasing this Shevy?  Did you have to go to their NY showroom?
LA: No, I actually got it through a local sheitel macher (wig stylist and distributor).  She ordered 4 Shevys from New York from me and I got to try each of them on in her studio.  I selected this one from the bunch.

How much did you pay for this piece?

$2600

I noticed the wig has highlights.  Are those highlights from a mixture of natural virgin hair or color treatment?
The hair came from a mixture of natural virgin hairs but I recently had a few more highlights put in by somebody I really trust and I was very pleased with the result.

Do you wash it yourself or have it washed by a sheitel macher?

While some women wash their own wigs by themselves, I know better than to treat a $2600 wig with anything less than professional hands. In other words, no!:)

Do you think the skin top is really realistic?
Yes-the appearance of the skin top is the best on the market.
I especially like how flat the wig lays on top of your forehead!

Does it give you headaches?
Surprisingly no

Does the cap fit you well, is it comfortable?
This is by far the most comfortable cap I have ever worn. I have tried about 5 different brands and this cap is truly unique in its construction.

Shevy sometimes has a reputation of having hair that is prone to knotting.  Have you found this?
This is a tough question. I know that Shevy wigs have a reputation for knotting but I think that may occur when the wig is worn for an entire day which I have yet to do so I can’t comment. I can say that when it is worn for several hours/half a day I have not experienced knotting.

Would you order from them again?
In retrospect I think I paid too much but that has more to do with the fact that I am not a daily wig wearer (or at least as of this point). As far as prices for Shevys go, that is within the ballpark of what ladies pay but when I think of what else I could have gotten for that money I would not have done it again. For example, I hear wonderful things about Tori Wigs in New York which run about half the price of Shevys for excellent European hair quality.
I have also heard praises of Tori Wigs and I hope to review some of their pieces soon.

Please note how much more red the sheitel looks when photographed at night in unnatural lighting versus the picture in which the owner is wearing it.

I love the colour dirty blonde, it's also called a 16/10 mix by some manufacturers, I believe. It's a very natural blonde, to my eye.

My only problem with 16/10 is that it tends to have warm undertones. I have extremely ASHY hair in the lightest shade of brown, but I have not been able to find this color anywhere...

Is the color of undertones in any way indicated in a sheitel's color designation?

Not necessarily. Every brand's color numbers can vary slightly. As usual, its hard to find light ash brown hair on sheitels for whatever reason.

I hold of L'Oreal Superior Preference 6BB light beige brown dye which I use to darken oxidized blond hairs...

Thanks for this review! I hope you will follow up once the piece has been worn and washed. It's very helpful to know how the hair will hold, tangling in this price range should definitely not occur!

My hair also has a "green" undertone, and even in the synthetic range, these colours are hard to find. I noticed people are put of if they see a green undertone on a wig. But most people don't know if their own hair has a green undertone.

I guess it's easier to make a hair dye with warm tones, than to blend that exact ashy tone that won't come out greyish or greenish. The wig makers might not want to risk that either.

There is a colouring conditioner by Back2Natural that "ashens" reddish and oxidized tones. It's only for ash colours, so you shouldn't use it to reduce oxidized tones on a red wig.

She has washed this a number of times and still finds the hair of an extremely good quality.

I have Clairol Shimmer Lights which is a purple colored shampoo that is supposed to reduce brassy tones in blonde hair.

Hi , this is Rivi from Tori wigs. Someone forwarded this blog to me, and I have to say, I am very impressed with the amount of knowledge you have and how you are helping people maximize the lifespan of their wigs. I know that blogs are supposed to be impartial, and I own Tori, so I probably shouldnt be commenting here. But it bothered me how people are so upset with the "shevy knotting issue". I think Shevy's are the BEST in the Industry (besides Tori, LOL), and knotting HAPPENS with healthy hair. take it back and I'm sure they will correct it.(knotting can happen for various reasons, I list a bunch on my facebook discussions tab). I'm SURE Shevy would rather correct it than have a bad rep. In terms of the amount of money spent on wigs, I've definitely found (in my partners' and my combined 30 years of working with various brands) that spending top dollar doesn't guarantee longevity or even that the wig won't oxidize or even knot! So, whatever wig you purchase in the future, make sure the company will give you a guarantee on the amount of time the color holds true (and dye it back for free if necessary)and also correct any knotting problems if they occur or replace the wig. Try not washing your own long hair for 3 weeks and tell me what happens! ;) anyway . . . Good luck on your blog! feel free to post comments on my facebook discussions page (I have a section about knotting and what to do about it if it occurs if you've already bought one from a co. that won't fix it for you.) if you want to ad to or disagree with anything I've written, please do. I hope we always exceed your expectations, and if we ever don't , let us know so that we can! - Rivi
